Abstract

Living walls, recognized as vertical gardens, help to improve building energy efficiency, and sequester carbon through plant biomass. This paper aims to examine the role of plant characteristics on thermal and carbon sequestration performances of living walls (LWs). The results of an experimental study during August-November 2018 in a tropical climate demonstrate the capacity of LWs in reducing air temperatures during daytime with the maximum of 3.6 °C for the indoor space and increasing increased the thermal resistance 0.05–0.09 m 2 ·K/W. Plant coverage and Leaf Area Index (LAI) of 12 plant species positively correlated to the cooling effect of LWs with a moderate relationship. Plant species with coverage above 100% and the LAI above 3 had good thermal performance and those with coverage above 95% had good performance in carbon sequestration. Plants with medium-sized leaves also performed better in temperature reduction. For carbon sequestration, LWs sequestered carbon in a range of 62.6–118.4 g·C/m 2 ·yr. Woody plants had the highest carbon content compared to forbs and succulents. Plants with dense foliage and medium-sized leaves are therefore suggested to grow in LWs for cooling purpose and woody plants are suggested for carbon sequestration.
